Moose are large ungulates (hoofed mammals) identified by their long, rounded snouts; huge, flattened antlers; humped back; thin legs; and massive bodies. These animals live in the northern United States, Canada and Europe. In North America, they are called moose; in Europe, they are called Eurasian elk.
Size
Moose are the largest members of the deer family, according to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. They are also the tallest mammals in North America. Their height, from hoof to shoulder, ranges from 5 to 6.5 feet (1.5 to 2 meters). Males are heavier than females; males weigh 794 to 1,323 pounds (360 to 600 kilograms), while females weigh 595 to 882 pounds (270 to 400 kg), according to the National Museum of Natural History.
Moose have short tails, a hump on their shoulders and large ears that can rotate to give them stereophonic hearing. Their fur is generally brown or black and provides excellent insulation from the cold. Male moose, called bulls, have massive antlers. These can grow 6 feet (1.8 m)wide from tip to tip. Antlers are only used for fighting for a mate, and they are shed each winter after mating season, which runs from September to October.
Habitat
Moose live only in areas that have seasonal snow cover. The animals prefer colder climates. They cannot tolerate temperatures above 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius) for long because they cannot sweat, and the fermentation caused by their digestion creates a large amount of heat, according to Animal Diversity Web (ADW), a database maintained by the University of Michigan's Museum of Zoology.
Habits
Moose are considered the least social animal, according to ADW. They are solitary animals, except when it comes to mating. During mating season, some dominant male moose in Alaska will herd a group of females together to create a 'harem herd.' Other males will fight the leader of the herd for the right to mate with the females.
The moose's most active times are at sunrise and at sunset. They spend their time finding new grazing spots, eating and resting to let their food digest, while always being wary of nearby predators, which include bears, wolves and cougars.
Diet
Moose is an Algonquin (a Native American tribe) term that means 'twig eater,' according to ADW. This is a good generalization of what moose eat in the wild. They tend to graze on the leaves, bark, pine cones, twigs and buds of trees and shrubs. They also like to eat aquatic plants like water lilies.
Moose have four-chambered stomachs, as do cows. They regurgitate partially digested food and 'chew their cud,' according to Kevin Jackson, author of 'Moose' (Reaktion Books, 2008). Food is fermented in the first chamber, and nutrients are extracted in the next three.
Offspring
After a gestation period of 231 days, females give birth to one baby, which is called a calf. Within their first day of life, calves can stand up on their own. They weigh around 35.7 pounds (16.2 kg) at birth and grow very quickly, gaining 2.2 lbs. (1 kg) per day while they are nursing.
After 6 months, calves are weaned. At 4 to 6 years old they are fully grown, though many never make it to adulthood. Around 50 percent of calves die due to bear or wolf attacks before they are 6 weeks old, according to ADW. Once they are adults, they have a survival rate of up to 95 percent. Surviving moose typically live around 15 to 20 years.
Classification/taxonomy
Moose are part of the Cervidae family, which includes cervids, caribou, deer, moose and wapiti. The taxonomy of moose, according to the Integrated Taxonomic Information System (ITIS), is:
Kingdom: Animalia
Subkingdom: Bilateria
Infrakingdom: Deuterostomia
Phylum: Chordata
Subphylum: Vertebrata
Infraphylum: Gnathostomata
Superclass: Tetrapoda
Class: Mammalia
Subclass: Theria
Infraclass: Eutheria
Order: Artiodactyla
Family: Cervidae
Subfamily: Capreolinae
Genus & species: Alces alces, Alces americanus (American moose)
Subspecies: Alces alces alces (European elk), Alces alces caucasicus (Caucasian moose — extinct), Alces americanus americanus, Alces americanus cameloides
While ITIS and some researchers list the American moose as a distinct species, there is still some debate about whether it is a true species (Alces americanus) or subspecies (Alces alces cameloides), according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). The group says, 'Further research is needed before a consensus would support species-level classification.'
Conservation status
The IUCN's Red List of Threatened Species categorizes moose as 'least concern' because they are very widespread and extremely abundant despite fairly intense hunting. The global population of moose is estimated to be about 1.5 million and increasing. The Caucasian moose was hunted to extinction by the early 19th century.
Young moose are prey for bears, wolves and cougars; about half do not live beyond 6 weeks, according to ADW. Adult moose, however, have a high chance for survival. Vehicle-moose collisions pose the greatest danger to the animals, according to Alaska Fish and Game. Hundreds of moose are killed each year in Alaska, which has the highest rate of moose-vehicle collisions in the world.
The plural of moose
The plural of 'moose' is 'moose' — not 'mooses' and not 'meese.' According to George W. Dunne, president of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, Illinois, the plural is the same as the singular in many words that come from Native American languages. 'That is true of most Indian names, whether of a tribe, such as the Winnebago and Potawatomi, or of an object, such as papoose,' he wrote in a nature bulletin. 'It is also true of many wildlife names not of Indian origin — for example: deer, mink and grouse.'
Other facts
Moose hair is hollow. This type of fur helps to insulate the animal from the cold.
A moose's front legs are longer than its back legs. This helps the moose more easily jump over things lying in its path.
The hump on a moose's back is caused by massive shoulder muscles.
The flap of skin that hangs below a moose's chin is called a bell, according to National Geographic.
A moose's wide hooves act like built-in snowshoes, helping the moose walk in the snow.
Moose can run 35 mph (56 km/h) over short distances and trot at 20 mph (32 km/h) for longer periods.
Moose are strong swimmers and can swim up to 6 mph (9.5 km/h) and as far as 12.4 miles (20 km). Moose can also stay under water for 30 seconds when swimming.

Troubleshooting Problems Installing or Running WolfQuest 2.7
By Rikkuzilla At WolfQuest on Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at 3:36 PM
A very small percentage of players have trouble installing and running the game. If you are so unfortunate as to fall into that group, please look down this page for tips that might get the game up and running quickly. Also check the game manual. If these don't help, please send an email to [email protected] with: • a description of the problem • which of these troubleshooting tips you tried • whether you have a Mac or Windows computer, and which version of that OS. • the game log. Please be sure to send all of that information or we may not be able to help you. You'll find the game log here: • On Windows, the game log is called 'output_log' and it's in the 'WolfQuest_Data' folder. • On Macs, search for the Console app, and open it. Then in the left sidebar, look for FILES/~/Library/Logs/Unity/Player.log. Open that log, and copy the entire log into the email. General Problems I didn't get the email to download the game. Go here to have itch.io send the purchase email again here: http://itch.io/docs/general/support I tried to login but it says my account doesn't exist. WolfQuest 2.7 has a new account system, so you can't use your old account from WQ2.5 or the forum. Click the Register button to create a new account. Where do I find the Key needed when registering my new game account? That's on your itch.io game download page. Click the link in the purchase email you got to claim the key. Go here to have itch.io send the purchase email again here: http://itch.io/docs/general/support I pasted in my Key, but it says Invalid Key. Be sure you type zeros and Os correctly. I need to download the game again. You can always go to your download page to get it again. Here's more info about that. Macs Game quits as soon as you launch it, or says 'Application is currently not available.' Be sure to drag the WolfQuest game into the Applications (or another) folder. (It won't work if you try to run it from the 'WolfQuest--Mac.dmg' folder that you downloaded. Game launcher says 'Patcher has failed.' The patcher sometimes fails if it can’t maintain a solid internet connection to download the game. Open the Settings panel in the game launcher (click the gear button in top-left) and click the Wrench button. If that doesn't work, try the Redownload button (circling arrows). If that doesn't work, send us a bug report with the player log. Windows Game launcher says 'Patcher has failed' or 'Application is currently not available' There are several things to try to fix these problems: • Sometimes the game launcher fails if it can’t maintain a solid internet connection to download the game. The simplest thing to do is to run the 'WolfQuest Setup' installer again, which may solve the problem. • If that doesn't work, open the Settings panel in the game launcher (click the gear button in top-left) and click the Wrench button. If that doesn't work, try the Redownload button (circling arrows). If that doesn't work, send us a bug report with the output_log. • Usually, installing the game into Documents/My Games/ works best, but if you are still having problems, try running the 'WolfQuest Setup' again and install the game in /Program FIles/ Blue Screen If you successfully run the game launcher and download the entire game, but then get a blue screen with only the WQ title and some blocky buttons, press ctrl-alt-delete to open the Windows Task Manager. Then just switch back to the game, and the problem should be solved. (We're trying to figure out why that happens.) Error: Can't connect to internet First, of course, check your internet connection. Then try these two things: • Open the Windows command prompt and type this: 'netsh winsock reset' (without the quotation marks). Then restart the computer, and hopefully it will connect. • The Windows firewall might be configured to include or exclude certain programs. Go to the Windows Control Panel, choose System and Security, and then choose Windows Firewall. Select 'Allow a program through” and select WolfQuest from the list. Error: CreateProcess failed; code 267. The directory name is invalid. Try one of the suggestions posted in the answer here and/or here - basically, it appears you have to move the setup to a different location and/or directory for it to run. WolfQuest Setup.exe does not open when executed. Cursor indicates that it is loading, but then it just stops, and nothing happens. Your computer could be blocking the installer for whatever reason, and this could bypass it. • Run the Command Prompt (type in 'cmd' in the search bar in either the Start menu or in the Search menu). A black box should open. Example • Locate the setup file and drag and drop it onto the command prompt. Alternatively, you can type out the directory, but that's unnecessary hassle. Example • Press space and type '/NCRC' (without the quotation marks) and hit Enter. Example Error: 'There should be 'WolfQuest_Data' folder next to the executable The default location for the WolfQuest Setup installer is in /Documents/My Games/, and that works best on most Windows computers. But occasionally it triggers this error. Please try running the 'WolfQuest Setup' again and this time, install the game in /Program Files/. (You may need to be logged into Windows as a user with administrative privileges.) The 'Choose Your Wolf' screen is blank. This particular problem appears to occur when the game can’t find this folder, which is where saved-wolf and saved-game files are stored: C:Users[yourusernameMy DocumentsWolfQuest Go into the My Documents folder on your computer and see if there is a WolfQuest folder inside it. • If there is, right-click on the WolfQuest folder, select Properties, then select Security and change the permissions to Full Control. (If you are unable to do that, try logging into Windows with a user account that has administrative privileges. • If there is not, create a new folder and name it ‘WolfQuest’ and then run the game again to see if that fixes things. AgeCheq Issues If you indicated your age was under 13, you'll need to get parental consent via the AgeCheq website. We are not legally allowed to change anyone's age after they have input it into the game. Here is this procedure: 1) Create a Parent Account on the AgeCheq website: https://parent.agecheq.com/logon.htm?appid=4c5e6232-1395-4471-bc49-0eea742c11f1 2) Then fill in the info under “Enter a Child' 3) Now you need to verify yourself as a parent, so look for the “Verify Now” link in top-right, and choose one of those options. 4) Now choose “Select a Child” in the top-left pulldown list. The WolfQuest game should be displayed on that child’s page in your Parent Dashboard. Click the green “Authorize this Game” button, and THEN click the green “Authorize for [child]” button near the top of the page. You must click both Authorize buttons. Then, it should say “Authorized” with a “Block this Game” button on the main child page. 5) Finally, give the PIN to your child to input into the game, and now they can register their account! We apologize for the complicated procedure. Parental consent is required by United States law, and this is the best system we found for it.
